Councillor Michelle Alexis Thomas Nelson is an accomplished Attorney-at-Law, community advocate, and public servant whose life has been defined by leadership, service, and a commitment to empowering others.
She currently serves as the Political Representative and Councillor for the Duhaney Park Division at the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), where she works closely with residents to address community needs and advance meaningful development. Since assuming office, she has organized community meetings, initiated and monitored community improvement projects, coordinated major drain-cleaning initiatives, supported residents during natural disasters, and advocated for improvements in public infrastructure and services. She has also launched Health Fairs and Kids Fairs aimed at supporting low-income families.
Councillor Thomas Nelson is also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Michelle Thomas & Associates, a multi-location law firm which she has led since 2018. Her legal practice encompasses family law, estate planning and management, business formation, civil and criminal litigation, conveyancing and real estate, legal research, and human rights.Her academic achievements reflect her dedication to excellence. She holds a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of East London, a Certificate of Legal Education from the Norman Manley Law School, and an Honours Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill.Long before entering elected office, Councillor Thomas Nelson established a strong record of youth and community leadership.
She has served in regional and international leadership capacities, including as a Special Interest Representative on the Commonwealth Youth Council, a Policy & Advocacy representative on the Caribbean Regional Youth Council, and a Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador. She has also served as a Youth Consultant in the revision of Jamaica's Culture Policy and as an Ambassador under the Governor General's I Believe Initiative.
Her commitment to service and leadership has earned her numerous honours, including the Commonwealth Youth Award for the Caribbean and Americas (2016), Commonwealth Youth Worker for the Caribbean and Americas (2015), Prime Minister's Youth Award for Volunteerism (2017), and the Gleaner-Flair Distinguished Woman Award in Law (2020).A passionate advocate for people and communities, Councillor Thomas Nelson believes that leadership is about more than holding public office.
